Common Questions

The Pro VI Low-Profile and Classic packages both have a wood frame with rounded edges, lacquer finish, diamond inlay and our Pro-Series All-Pull system and undercarriage components.

The Low-Profile package has a 3/16″ Thinline CNC-cut aluminum neck, which spans from the endplate to the Sho-Bud “ashtray” keyhead, with Kluson KDLS-5-N tuners. An ultra-sleek, minimalist silhouette with a crystal-clear ring through the highest register.

The Classic package has a raised tail plate, classic wood neck and the Sho-Bud “Gumby” keyhead, with Grover Rotomatics tuners. A more traditional Sho-Bud aesthetic and the slightly warmer character of a wood neck.

Both share the Sho-Bud Pro-Series All-Pull system with bearings, a single-coil pickup, teardrop knee levers, classic diamond inlay and undercarriage components. They are both made standard with figured maple and choice of color with a lacquer finish. The difference is the cabinet size and design:

The Pro V uses a 11 ½″-width wood frame with squared edges and a step-down/armrest. It is available in both a single neck and double neck model.

The Pro VI uses a narrower 8″-width wood frame with rounded edges and no stepdown/armrest. It offers two top-board design packages, but is only available in a single neck model.

The Maverick II is our lightest pedal steel at 24 lbs, with the Perm-Series Pull-Release system and a fixed pedal setup and configuration (no additional foot pedals or knee levers). It has an aluminum frame with a maple soundboard, our Thinline aluminum neck and Sho-Bud Ashtray keyhead.

The Pro VI uses the Pro-Series All-Pull system with a customizable pedal setup, and the option to add knee levers or foot pedals. Both are professional instruments built to the same Sho-Bud standard. The Pro VI is the move if you want a wood guitar and customizable pedal setup, or the ability to add pedals/levers.

Current build time is approximately 5-7 months. We use UPS Ground for all guitar shipments, unless other arrangements are made in advance. All shipments are fully insured, and you’ll receive the UPS tracking number once your guitar is completed.

The Pro-Series All-Pull system uses a three-piece string puller, designed to handle more demanding pedal setups. The result is extremely smooth pedal and knee-lever action. Less friction, a more consistent feel, and reliable return-to-pitch over long sets.

The Perm-Series Pull-Release system uses a single-piece string puller, which is great for sound transfer, but it has setup limitations. Simple design, less weight.

The guitar weighs 35 lbs on its own. The standard hard shell case adds 26 lbs, for a total of roughly 61 lbs packed.

Our standard cases are made by Red Dirt Case Company. They’re protective for everyday transport and shipping, but we don’t recommend flying with them. Air travel is hard on instruments, and standard cases aren’t built for those impacts. For flying, we recommend an ATA-approved case. Red Dirt and other case makers offer them, and you can add one to your build.

Yes. Additional knee levers (up) and additional foot pedals are each $300. Add them at checkout.

The Pro VI is not available in a Double Neck. Visit our Pro V page for information on our Double Neck model.

  • Tuning wrench (used on nylon tuners, to tune Raises and Lowers)
  • Leg Pouch (for legs and pedal rods)

I love my Sho Bud Pro VI. It is the most comfortable S-10 pedal steel guitar that I have ever played - there is plenty of space to sit behind it - it is easy to swivel my foot over all three pedals while catching the knee levers without having to sit awkwardly like many S-10’s require a player to do. The tone!! It is wooden and warm and crispy and snappy in all the right places - it reminds me so much of all those old early Jimmy Day recordings. The pedal action is so smooth - it’s so easy to half pedal and I get just as much out of the raises as I do the releases, especially in the knee levers - lots of expression there. The tone is consistent through a variety of amps, I typically use a Standel or a Twin and it truly gives me that classic sound. The lows on the guitar are tight and defined and the highs are silky - it is a very full sounding guitar. The finish is flawless, it’s a looker for sure and the build quality and sound all make it a fantastic guitar.
